Setting Up Oblivion For Mod Use

If you are brand-new to Oblivion mods or just looking for a clean start, use this guide to learn how to set up Oblivion for mod use. If you already have the game installed, re-installing clean is optional; I have simply found this method to be the best way to prevent problems in the future.
This guide was written for Oblivion, but also mostly works for Skyrim. I'll add a second guide specifically for Skyrim once there are more mods and utilities out for it. Meanwhile, just improvise with the instructions here.

Step 1: Install Oblivion and any expansions and official mod packs you have for it.
If you are running Windows Vista or later, make sure to install Oblivion OUTSIDE of the Program Files directory. Many choose c:Oblivion, or c:GamesOblivion, as their alternate install location. This prevents you from needing to run as Administrator or turn off UAC for mods to work.
Step 2: Download and install the Official Oblivion Patch.
Your game MUST be patched to the latest (v1.2.0416) in order for most mods to work. Make sure you choose the Shivering Isles patch if you have that expansion.
If you are installing the Game of the Year version with Shivering Isles, your game will already be patched. Attempting to patch it will result in error messages.

Step 3: Download and install the Unofficial Oblivion Patch (UOP), as well as the Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch (USIP) and the Unofficial Official Mods Patch (UOMP) if you have installed those components.

These patches correct many errors and inconsistencies in the game that Bethesda couldn't be bothered to fix on their own. The corrections prevent crashes, immersion breaking inconsistencies, and fix literally thousands of tiny and monstrous bugs in the game.
These patches replace a large amount of models and textures. Therefore, it is wise to install these before any other mesh or texture packs.
Step 4: Download and install OBSE.
Oblivion Script Extender (OBSE) provides a plethora of scripting functions for modders. As a player, you need to have this installed so mods that rely on these functions work properly for you.
Step 5: Download and install Pluggy.
Pluggy extends OBSE even further. Like with OBSE, you will see no changes in-game; this simply allows you to use mods that depend on it.
Step 6: Set up multiple Oblivion installs using MOM or mTES4.
This step is completely optional, but now is the best time to do it if you're gonna! Many mod users enjoy having multiple installs so they can have completely different mod setups for different characters, or for testing/mod-making, or to run a Total Conversion (where Oblivion gets replaced by a different game built on the same engine, such as Nehrim). It also makes a nice backup system. For the particular instructions on this, please see the documentation for the applications linked above.
I heavily recommend that you make a clone of your install before you start loading it up with mods or even mod managers, other than the ones listed above. This way you always have one 'clean' install, which you can use to test mods, to make mods, or even to fall back on should one of your modded installs go absolutely haywire.
Note that you will need to adjust the settings of mod managers so that they store mod packages in separate folders, unless you want all of your installs to use the same mod packages (OBMM settings button, Wrye Bash's bash.ini). MOM and mTES4 can set this up for you too, if you prefer not to do it manually.
Step 7: Choose a mod manager. Download & install it.
This step is big. The two main contenders here are Oblivion Mod Manager and Wrye Bash. I use both for different things, and you eventually will too. The key differences:
OBMM is much simpler for a new mod user. When you download a mod in *.omod format, you can just double-click it from within Explorer, and OBMM will open and the mod will be in list, ready to be activated. Double-clicking it again from within OBMM will activate the mod. All the files will go in the right place. When you de-activate the mod, all those files will be removed, making cleanup super easy. Modders can even add scripts to omods to present you with the mod's options when you activate the omod. You can create your own .omod files from any folder or archive easily. OBMM also handles archive invalidation for you.
Wrye Bash is a laden trove of useful and, in some cases, necessary features for mod users. It manages not just your mods, but your saved games too! Its main claim to fame, however, is the Bashed Patch - a mod built on the spot by the program that functions as a patch for your existing mods to help them all work together seamlessly. Without a Bashed Patch, many mods can't work together, and you'd have to choose one or the other, or manually merge the mods into one.
My recommendation is to start with OBMM. Learn it. Get comfortable using and making omods. After a while you'll start to realize you need a Bashed Patch, because you can't have one mod adding new eyes and another mod adding new hairs and have both of them work without one (that's one example of thousands). When you get to that point, it's time to delve into Wrye Bash.

Step 8: Back up your Oblivion installation.
By this I mean copy and paste the ENTIRE thing into wherever you keep backup data. If you screw up your game really badly with mods, you won't have to repeat steps 1-5 to start over. You can literally just delete your current Oblivion folder, then copy and paste this backup folder into its former place. You probably won't need the backup once you get really comfortable with the game's file & folder structure, at which point you can delete the backup. You can also skip this step if you're really confident, or just low on disk space.
Once you have a mod setup you really like, you may want to do this a second time, depending on how much hard drive space you have to spare.
If you set up multiple installs for Oblivion, you can skip all of this, since you've pretty much already done it.

Step 9: Download and install mods!

Start small and simple at first if you've never used mods before. Avoid anything that appears complicated to install, or complicated to play.
If a mod's description says, 'Requires X to work,' then don't download or install it unless you actually have X.
If a mod's description says, 'Is not compatible with X,' then don't download or install it if you have X.
One or two at a time. Installing a lot of mods at once takes away the fun of the discovery, and also pretty much guarantees you're going to break something without knowing how you did it. But once you've learned the ropes, you'll find that mods bring a ton of enrichment to the game and can extend its enjoyable play-through time by hundreds of hours.

Introduction (Please read!)

Ahh, Oblivion, my favourite (and the best) TES game, how I love you so.

My old 2015 modding guide for Oblivion may be found here, but this page is a new and improved version! While I won't quite rebuild the guide from the ground up, there are definitely enough new additions and changes to warrant me officially discontinuing the old one. Also, the 69 steps were funny four years ago, but they became more of an arbitrary limitation as time marched on.

Before you go any further, know that I have selected all of my mods very meticulously. While I don't mind getting suggestions on things to add, I won't pay much attention to being offered 'alternatives' that I have thoroughly researched, tested, and found to be much worse than what I use. Specific reasoning for most of my mod choices may be found on the Oblivion Mod FAQ page.

Also, please note that while this is definitely a guide that can be used by anyone, including modding beginners, you may be spoiled on most aspects of the game if you've never played it before.

I would like to start by saying that users wishing to mod Oblivion must be very careful, as it is a fickle beast and certainly much harder to mod than Skyrim and most other Bethesda games. The main reason for this is due to the fact that Oblivion mods must be installed in order so that certain aspects of them overwrite each other in ways that do not break the game and mods entirely, hence the numbered steps, if you wish for everything to play nicely together. It took many hours of troubleshooting and reading comments and bug reports to finally land on a serviceable installation order, so only ignore it at your own risk

As with every other game guide on my site, know that this is a comprehensive modding guide, meaning that we will address nearly every category of content with as many mods as necessary, while minimizing hiccups and conflicts. We will be enhancing gameplay, graphics, quests, immersion, stability, and much, much more - all while maintaining lore-friendliness throughout the process.

Acquiring Oblivion

It's not difficult to get a copy of Oblivion nowadays, but what you want is the 'Game of the Year Edition Deluxe', which contains all released DLCs and Expansions for the game. You can find it on Steam here.
I personally recommend NOT purchasing the game on Steam, simply because the Steam overlay can range from annoyingly interfering with, to catastrophically wrecking, some aspects of the game. This usually only happens with certain mods, none of which are in my guide as far as I know, but if you're adamant on using Steam then make sure to disable the overlay for Oblivion in particular.

How did I get the game not on Steam? That's a secret;)

The DLCs

There are a total of 10 official DLCs that have been made for Oblivion. We'll be using only 8, leaving both the (infamous) Horse Armor and Thieves Den alone. While you can use all of them without any conflicts with other mods, I recommend leaving out said 2 mods for several reasons. Make sure to select what you want during the game's installation. Only the two main expansions, Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles, are truly required. As for why I prefer some of the smaller DLCs over others, please see the Oblivion Mod FAQ page.

System Requirements

As a disclaimer, the fully modded setup will require a decent mid-range (for 2019) PC for the game. Many of the mods have options to tweak performance in case you fall under the recommended specs.
My PC is 7 years old, and runs the fully modded setup quite well at usually a solid 50fps, and in heavy outdoor environments I tend to get 30-40fps. My specs are: Windows 7 64-bit, i5 3570 @ 3.4GHz, 8GB RAM, and a single GTX 760. I also have the game and mods installed on an SSD instead of an HDD for better loading times, they're always lightning-fast and take about 5 seconds at the most. Speaking of storage devices, the fully modded game takes up ~30GB of space (not including essential backups!) so make sure you have the disk space.
I also cannot vouch for the game's performance or how well mods will work on different operating systems other than Win7 64-bit, sorry. While Win10 is the common OS nowadays, it shouldn't interact TOO differently with modded Oblivion compared to Win7, but keep in mind that some things may be different.

Following The Guide + Modding Best Practices

The guide is separated into numbered steps, most of which only require one mod to be installed at a time, but some steps have multiple mods in them instead.

Mods are first named fully, then with a short abbreviated form which they will thereinafter be referred to as. Example: Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul/OOO

The name of every mod from each step will also double as a link to its download page. For Nexus mod pages, click the 'Files' tab to see the downloads. You also need a Nexus account to download from the site. Unless otherwise mentioned in a step, only download the mod's latest numbered version, which is usually at the top of the Files list.

Most mods change the same game files, and will notify you when installing them that they'd like to overwrite something that is already there. This is intentional, and we will take advantage of this with our specific numbered steps, so always allow them to overwrite.

Only start a new game to begin playing after you have finished the entire guide. Also, never uninstall mods or install any new mods during a playthrough after a save has already been created. This should go without saying but some people may not know that these can break the game. You can save a test character for now, but remember to not use it/delete it entirely once you're finished the guide. I recommend using the console command coc wawnetinnexterior which will place your character in a large open area to run around and test mods as you install them.

After installing the game with your desired DLCs, launch it once so that it generates configuration files and create a new save - this is known as an unmodified 'vanilla' install.

After every step, you must launch the game and load a random save/start a new game to make sure there are no obvious conflicts. The main reason for doing this is to ensure the game even runs at all, so if it crashes upon launching then you've done something wrong. I know it's tedious but going slow is the safest way to mod - Imagine installing everything at once without checking if the game works, but then one mod broke your setup but you don't know which one did it, and therefore having to start all over again!

Also note that you must not use the 'Mod Manager Download' button when downloading Nexus mods since we won't be using Nexus Mod Manager/Vortex (see here as to why) - you must download every mod manually. Make sure to neatly put them in a folder all together too.

Backups

After the game is initially installed, create a backup of your Oblivion installation directory (the one containing the Data folder and the game's .exe) as well as the Oblivion documents folder located in /Documents/My Games/.
It is essential to keep an entirely unmodified backup the game for several reasons, mainly because you can simply delete your installation and replace it with the backup instead of having to wait for the game to be redownloaded and reinstalled in the case of your setup getting broken like it did for me :^(.

You'll also want to make another backup after you are fully finished following the guide - it helps to have a modded backup in case you decide to modify your setup and want to restore it. You may also want to compress the backups with an archival tool in order to save disk space.

Mod Types

There are three types of mod files for Oblivion, and three ways to install them. There are OMOD-installed files and BAIN-installed files, which are installed through their own programs due to having unique installation scripts that only said programs can utilize, and regular mod files that are installed manually by simply dropping them into either the Oblivion/Data folder or the Oblivion Mods/Bash Installers folder. More information on OMOD/BAIN mods and their respective programs are below. For each step or each mod in a step, it will be noted which method the mod needs to be installed with - OMOD, BAIN, or manually with Wrye Bash (see Step 3). Some manually-installed mods don't just go in the Data folder; it will be noted where else to place them when they appear.

Essential Utilities

Before we even begin downloading mods, first we'll need a few utility programs. If you don't have a free archival extraction program such as winRAR or 7zip, download it now.

1. Oblivion Script Extender/OBSE - TRUE Manual (Place the contents of the .zip into your main Oblivion install folder, NOT the Data folder.)

From now on, ALWAYS launch the game through the obse_loader.exe. If using the Steam version of the game, read the .zip's readme file for other ways the game must be launched instead.

2. Better Oblivion Sorting Software/BOSS - Use the boss_installer.7z file and run the installer.exe, I recommend installing it to the Oblivion install folder in a new folder named something like Utilities.

If you somehow don't know, this tool sorts your load order, which determines which mods the game loads in order when it's launched. If there are load order conflicts, the game will be affected in various ways; ranging from quests being broken to automatically crashing upon launching, so BOSS will fix that.
You must run BOSS every time a Step past #6 is completed.

3. Wrye Bash/WB - Run the installer.exe found in the archive. NOTE that if you already have WB installed for Skyrim, when launching its installer for Oblivion MAKE SURE to untick the box that says it'll install for Skyrim too, or else you'll overwrite files that are already there for Skyrim. And of course, navigate the installer to the directory where you installed Oblivion at.

WB is for BAIN installations, Bashed Patches, and almost every other mod unless noted otherwise. Simply drop an archived .zip/rar/etc into your Oblivion Mods/Bash Installers folder, click on the Installers tab within the Wrye Bash program, and right-click Install the archive from there. This is what you should do when a mod says to install it manually unless otherwise noted. The reason for doing this instead of actually 'manually' placing files into the game's Data folder is so that WB can easily remove them if needed, and to perform something called Archive Invalidation, which is an Oblivion engine problem that causes loaded texture mods to not be applied, but WB does Archive Invalidation automatically. When something says to install it 'TRUE Manual', then you must actually manually drop it where it needs to go rather than use WB.
Some mods ask you questions through a Wizard installation; if a mod has the Wizard option when you right-click it, make sure to select that instead - this is known as a BAIN installation. BAIN installation options are fully up to you unless otherwise noted. In any mod page's downloads section, ALWAYS go for the downloads labeled 'BAIN' in order to properly install them via Wizard. NEVER use the 'Download with Manager' button, always place the downloaded archives in the 'WhereveryouinstalledWB/Oblivion Mods/Bash Installers' folder manually.
The thing that Bashed Patches do exactly is combine all your various mod edits that make changes to the game's leveled lists (lists that the game uses to determine what enemies spawn, what items are found in loot, and so on) to make sure everything works well together. By default, one mod that changes leveled lists will overwrite the other depending on your load order, and so you won't see changes from both mods unless you use a Bashed Patch. Many MANY mods change leveled lists, so for a tl;dr: just be grateful that Wrye Bash exists.
To use a Bashed Patch: You'll notice a new mod/.esp file called Bashed Patch at the bottom of your load order now within WB's Mods tab. Right-click on it and then select Rebuild Patch, and a new window will open. Make sure on the left-hand side of the window that 'Leveled Lists' is checked on if it isn't already - do NOT touch anything else if you don't know what you're doing. Then select the Build Patch button and wait for it to finish. You've done it! Don't forget to enable the .esp of course.
You must rebuild your Bashed Patch every time you complete a Step past #6.

4. Oblivion Mod Manager/OBMM - Use the 'OBMM Extended <date> - Setup' file and run the installer.exe.

OBMM is for .OMOD installations. With OBMM, click on the 'Create' button, click 'Add archive' and select the .zip you'll be making into an .omod, select 'Yes' if it asks you to import omod conversion data, and click 'Create omod'. Activate the mod when it's finished decompressing and it will usually ask you further questions you may answer accordingly. OMOD installation options are fully up to you unless otherwise noted. Unless a mod also has a BAIN installation option, go for downloads labeled 'OMOD'. NEVER use the 'Download with Manager' button, always place the downloaded archives manually.

5. TES4Edit - Place the archive's contents into the Oblivion/Utilities folder we made in Step 2.

TES4Edit is for cleaning dirty mods, we'll do this at the end. Can also be used to tweak your game/mods extensively if you're into that, but this is not recommended for most people. 'Dirty Edits' are named as such because they are unnecessary changes accidentally made by modders and can clutter up, slow down, or even catastrophically damage the game if they aren't taken care of. You'll be made aware of which mods are dirty and which ones are clean whenever you run BOSS. See the end of the guide for more info. NOTE that you are to NEVER clean a mod if the mod author says not to on their mod page, even if there are dirty edits discovered by BOSS. The reason being is that some mods intentionally make dirty edits in order to function properly, so be careful what you clean.

6. 4GB Patch - Install it anywhere and run it when you need to use it.

The 4GB Patch allows the game to allocate more than the default amount of memory, and will improve performance+prevent crashing. Apply it to the 'Oblivion.exe', 'obse_loader.exe', and 'OblivionLauncher.exe'. Note that apparently the GOG version of the game has the patch applied to the executables already, but it wouldn't hurt to apply again just in case it isn't, and you need to use it on the obse_loader.exe anyway.

Recap:

AFTER EVERY STEP: CHECK THE MOD PAGE(S) FOR DETAILED INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS JUST IN CASE, INSTALL WITH THE NOTED PROGRAM(S), RUN BOSS, REBUILD THE BASHED PATCH, AND START THE GAME TO SEE IF IT RUNS! IF YOU GET AN IMMEDIATE CRASH, YOU'VE DONE SOMETHING WRONG!

The Mods

7. Unofficial Oblivion Patch/UOP, Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch/USIP, and Unofficial Oblivion DLC Patches/UODLCP - Manual for all; remember to do it through WB, see Step 3

Delete the patch .esps for DLCs that aren't installed or you'll CTD when you launch the game (Ignore this if you're using all official DLCs). Also deactivate the 'UOP Vampire Aging & Face Fix.esp' as we'll be able to fix said bug without using an .esp slot later.
It should be around this point that you notice that some mods automatically show up as 'Mergeable' when you attempt to rebuild your patch. Follow this picture in order to successfully merge them into your patch - this is very handy because games on this engine have a limit of 255 active .esp files at a time (the game will not launch with any more than that), but merging them into your patch allows you to use more than 255 mods activated at once! The picture shows WB for Skyrim, but the same principle applies to Oblivion. While we don't come close to hitting the .esp limit in this guide, you'll still want to merge mergeable mods into the Bashed Patch in order to increase performance from having less plugin files loaded, and to also future-proof this load order in case you ever want to add more mods than what's listed in the guide.

8. The following OBSE Plugins (TRUE Manual but NOT in the Data folder, place their files in the Oblivion/Data/OBSE/Plugins folder!) :

a)Oblivion Stutter Remover/OSR - Open its .ini and and change the value of 'bReplaceHeap' to 1.
b)Trifle - Open its .ini and change the value of 'PatchMusic' to 0 (.ini won't appear until the game is launched after Trifle.dll is installed).

9. DarkUId DarN - OBMM, DarNifiedUI Config Addon - Manual, then AV Uncapper Settings Fixed - Manual

There is an .OMOD file of DarkUId DarN already available to download, which you may use instead of manually turning the archive into an .OMOD. Place the .OMOD into your 'Oblivion/OBMM/Mods' folder, open OBMM, click Load and find the file, select it, then click Activate. Click 'Select Components' and see this picture for installation instructions.
Select only the first sub-package in the Installer tab for AV Uncapper Settings Fixed - click here.

10. QZ Easy Menus - Manual, and Display Stats - OMOD

The only install option for Display Stats is to select what UI mod you have installed. Obviously, select DarkUId DarN.

11. Enhanced Hotkeys, and Quest Log Manager - OMOD for both

Select your choice of install options for Enhanced Hotkeys. I recommend the defaults for each, and 'Read key bindings.ini file first time'.
For Quest Log Manager's install options; obviously the UI mod is DarkUId DarN, and leave the other as its default.

12. Clean Up - OMOD, Floating Weapons Fix - Manual, and RefScope - OMOD

Open kuerteeCleanUp.ini located in Oblivion/Data/Ini and change the line 'set kCUQuest.cleanActors' to 0. It will avoid potential issues with actors tagged as Quest Items.

13. Atmospheric Dark UI Loading Screens - OMOD, and DarkUI Menu Video Replacement Scenery - Manual

The install options for the Loading Screens are up to you, I prefer the Random Quotes for the loading text.
The Main Menu Video Replacement is optional, I just really like the way it looks.

14. Corronerras Maximum Compatibility Skeletons/CMCS, and BlockHead Animations Compilation - Manual for both

Grab both the main download and the NewIdleAnimations package for BlockHead Animations Compilation. It is a very subtle change to most vanilla walking and idle animations by giving different the races different personal touches, I recommend not straying too far from what it does by not downloading any similar mods.

15. Unidirectional Attack, and Coloured Enemy Health - Manual for both

Unidirectional Attack is similar to Mortal Enemies for Skyrim, IE preventing egregious enemy tracking during their attacks. Open its .ini in Oblivion/Data/Ini and change the line 'set UAQuest.bUseOnPlayer' to 0.
Coloured Enemy Health is a surprisingly useful little mod, don't overlook it.

16. Expanded Greetings - OMOD, Dialogue Tweaks Fixes and Restorations/DTFR - Manual, and Realistic Player Dialogue Overhaul/RPDO - Manual

Open the ini for DTFR in Oblivion/Data/Ini and change the line 'set TrespassDialogRestore' to 0, the rest of the options should be left as their defaults.

17. Put it in its Place Enhanced Grabbing/PiiiP - OMOD

Open the Enhanced Grabbing.ini in Oblivion/Data, and change the following lines:
Set 'zzPiiiPVarsQ.sToggleGrabAutoFlinger' to 0
Set 'zzPiiiPVarsQ.sGrabAnims' to 0
Set 'zzPiiiPVarsQ.sSlapper' to 0
Leave all the other settings alone as their defaults.

18. Qarl's Texture Pack III Redimized/QTP3 - OMOD, QTP/UOP Compatibility Patch - Manual, Bomret's Texture Pack for Shivering Isles/BTP - Manual, and QTP3 Custom Road Texture - Manual

It is normal that QTP3 takes approximately ~20 minutes to compress and convert into .OMOD format.

19. New Shadows for Trees - Manual, Enhanced Vegetation - OMOD, and Enhanced Vegetation Darker Trunks - Manual

Choose only one size of textures for Enhanced Vegetation; I recommend the high-res version. Then grab the Optional Files archive and select one of the larger vegetation variations (I recommend 25% bigger), and then select the version for a timescale of 30 (the game default, which you should not change).
Get the same-sized textures for the Darker Trunks that match the size you picked for the main Enhanced Vegetation textures.

20. Gecko's Ayleid Ruins Textures, Gecko's Fort Interior Textures, and Gecko's Imperial Dungeon Textures - Manual for all three.

Grab the 'NO Parallax' version of the Ayleid Ruins textures, they'll unfortunately mess with some later graphics mods otherwise.

21. The following miscellaneous texture mods (Manual for all but F and N):

If you're worried about performance, feel free to omit any of the high-resolution stuff.

22. The following miscellaneous armour/weapon mesh and texture mods (Manual for all):

a)Insanity's Improved Armoury Compilation - Requires registration for TESalliance to download. Grab the non-OMOD version and select these install options.
b)Insanity's Ebony Sword Replacer - Pretty optional but looks great and we use this in Skyrim too, I hate the vanilla Ebony swords in both games. Manually go into the 'Optional' folder of the archive, take the Oblivion-style retextures, and use them to overwrite the EbonySword.dds and Scabbard.dds found in Data/Textures/Insanity/Weapons/Ebony.
c)Weapon Improvement Project/WIP - Use the WIP .esp that it comes with as well.
d)AwesomeSauce Reflection Maps

23. Open Cities Classic/OCC - BAIN

Select these options when installing Open Cities.

24. Unique Landscapes Compilation/UL - OMOD or BAIN, up to you

Simply select Full when installing UL, you want all of its additions. Do NOT select Merged Full however, you want individual .esps for compatibility's sake (some patches require individual UL modules as masters).
It is NORMAL for UL and OCC to be incompatible with some landscape seams and tears at this point. We'll do patches in a bit.

25. Kvatch Rebuilt - Manual, Weather - All Natural - OMOD or BAIN, DOWNPOUR Rain Retexture - Manual, Falling Leaves - OMOD or BAIN or Manual, and Detailed Terrain/DT - OMOD

Leave all the options as their defaults for All Natural's installation.
Select Large in DOWNPOUR's sub-packages.
Falling Leaves is neat but inconsequential, skip it if you're worried about performance. select Yes during install for UL Lush Woodlands patch.
Get every DT file from the Files tab. The main Beta II OMOD, the Shader Patch, the Shivering Isles Texture Pack, and the Unique Landscapes Texture Pack - 4 OMODs in total.

26. Immersive Interiors/II, Immersive Interiors Bravil and Leyawiin, Immersive Interiors Imperial City, and Immersive Interiors Landscape Addon - Manual for all

Grab the Open Cities Outer Districts patch for II Imperial City as well.
The II Landscape Addon is optional if you're concerned about performance. It is also normal for it to only affect Anvil, Chorrol, Bruma, and Cheydinhal, as it is unfortunately not completed.

27. Hentai Gentleman's EyeCandy Body/HGEC - OMOD, High Rez Skin Textures for HGEC - Installer, HGEC Argonians and More Nude Fix - Manual, Robert's Male Body Replacer - OMOD, Oblivion Character Overhaul v1/OCO1 - Manual, and Improved Vanilla Hairs - Manual

HGEC install options are up to you. Might be best to use non-nude textures and non-ridiculous proportions.
Only use the '2048x2048 Full Package' version of High Rez HGEC Textures. It comes with its own InstallTool.exe, which works basically the same as an OMOD or BAIN installation - point it to your Data folder and select whatever options you want (except for custom races we won't be using), again preferably with some common sense.
Only use the HGEC NudeBeastRaces if you used the nude option for base HGEC and you're a sicko who wants to see realistic beast race nudity too.
Only use the 'OMOD FINAL' MaleBodyReplacer file. Its install options are up to you other than making sure you do not select the custom head meshes and face textures, might be best to use non-nude textures and non-ridiculous proportions.
Oblivion Character Overhaul v1 is, in my opinion, the best overhaul for character faces. See the Oblivion Mod FAQ for my reasoning as to why.
Grab both the Reduced Textures and Mesh Improvements files for Improved Vanilla Hairs.

28. Oblivion Stereo Sound Overhaul/OSSO, Consistent Beggar Voices, and Dynamic Music System/DMS, then my Custom Music Folder + DMS.ini - Manual for all

DMS' configuration is very complicated, but luckily for you I have figured out the logistics, so all you need to do is drop my custom files into the Data folder.
My custom music folder includes many new music tracks, mainly including ones from popular video games and anime. They're all very immersive and fit in the game perfectly (in my opinion), but you're free to go through and further customize the tracks yourself by adding/removing songs as needed. And don't worry, the vanilla game tracks are still there AND they've been copy+pasted many times over to ensure they play slightly more frequently than the new tracks. The new music is from Morrowind, Daggerfall, Skyrim, Berserk, Susumu Hirasawa, Dark Souls, Skyrim's Fantasy Music Overhaul mod, the Celestial Aeon Project, and many, MANY more. Full credits to all the amazing artists - don't sue pls. If you want to add some tracks yourself, just remember that they have to be .mp3 files, and that you need to remove any album art, artist tags, etc from the file or else it'll screw up when it plays in-game.

29. Graphical enhancements - Oblivion Reloaded (TRUE Manual for all, place their files in the Data folder) :

a)Oblivion Reloaded/OR - Requires registration for TESReloaded to download. I recommend NOT getting the latest version (6.5.0 at the time of writing) and instead get the previous version (6.4.1) instead, as 6.5.0 is full of bugs and kept crashing my game even when it was uninstalled. This may be an outdated statement by now and I'm sure that versions past 6.5.0 are fine, however if you would like to use 6.4.1 like I do then here is a download link for it. This also lets you use my exact .ini files for it, as they will be compatible with that version.
b)Custom OR Shaders + ini - These make the game look amazing, if I do say so myself. You're free to use whatever shader settings you like, but make sure the OblivionReloaded.ini is similar, if not the same as mine.
OR is similar in what it accomplishes to an ENB like for Skyrim, but in this case they are actually able to compliment each other and work well together, hence us using both.

30. Graphical enhancements - ENB (TRUE Manual for all, place their files in the Oblivion (NOT Data) folder) :

a)ENBseries Binaries - Take only the files from the WrapperVersion folder.
b)Monkey ENB Preset - A really beautiful preset with a perfect balance of gameplay performance and screenshottable visuals, I honestly can't recommend any other for Oblivion. In fact, my OR settings are also based off of Monkey ENB's author's recommended OR shader files - he really knows what he's doing.
You may not need to use an ENB at all if you're satisfied with OR's visuals on their own, definitely skip this step if you're worried about performance. I personally don't use an ENB for Oblivion either.
Monkey ENB also comes with SweetFX, which is another post-processing tool. It basically just increases color saturation in this case, you must use the End key to take screenshots that show its visuals so don't worry too much about it.

31. Lights of Oblivion Road Lanterns, Talos Bridge Gatehouse, and New Roads and Bridges - Manual for all

Get only one Mesh version for Lights of Oblivion. I recommend the Fantasy or Rustic version.
The latest version (v3) for New Roads and Bridges is at the bottom of the Files list, not the top.

32. Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul/OOO - Manual

First grab the 'OOO esps' archive, then the BSA archive. Install them both with WB as you normally would. There are some other OOO files we'll need, mainly patches, but don't worry about them right now.

33. Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul Extended/OOOE, and OOO Shivering Isles/OOOSI - Manual for both

Grab every file that OOOE has; Meshes, Esps, Textures, and HGEC Conversions. Install them both with WB as you normally would.
First grab the OOOSI esps archive, then the BSA archive. Select these options when installing it.

34. The following extra files from OOO's Files tab (Manual for A, TRUE Manual for B and C):

a) OOO - KotN
b) OOO Extended - TRUE Manual, let it overwrite the OOOExtended.esp from Step 33.
c) OOO Misc Files - TRUE Manual, and for only one .esp: take the xulPantherRiver OOO Patch.esp from the 'UL patches (separate)' subfolder. You do NOT need any other files.

35. Common Oblivion/Cobl - OMOD

Select these options when installing Cobl.
Grab the Cobl Cosmetic Resources file as well. Install it Manually, make sure to select the 'FIRST' and 'If using Robert's Male Bodies' sub-packages before installing it.

36. The following player home mods (Manual for all except C):

a)Chorrol Arborwatch House Basement
b)Battlehorn Castle Upgraded - Grab the Cobl Features file for it as well. NOTE: You must deactivate the 'DLCBattlehornCastle - Unofficial Patch.esp' if you get this, as most of the patch's changes are incorporated into it.
c)Frostcrag Reborn - Select only the Core and Cobl Additions sub-packages when installing it, Kvatch Rebuilt 3.0 automatically detects Frostcrag Reborn and patches for it. This is a newer de-isolated release of this great old mod, meaning you can use its Unofficial Patch .esp with it.
These are all pretty much optional depending on your tastes. I only really stress that you get Frostcrag Reborn for the amazingly long and beautiful quest that comes with it.
If you like, I also recommend the author for part A's other house mods, found here.
The reason why I use several DLCs and mods that all add/improve player homes is for variety's sake; I won't use the same house on every character I make (and neither should you), but I can still go through every quest for their rewards - this is especially apparent with Frostcrag Reborn and a few other big quest mods that come with their own homes too.

37. Kragenirs Death Quest/KDQ, Reclaiming Sancre Tor/RST, and KDQ-RST-UL Patch - Manual for all

Grab all four main files for RST; Meshes, Sounds, Textures, and Esp.
Use the UL Separate version for the KDQ-RST-UL Patch.

38. Let the People Drink/LtPD - OMOD, and Alternate Start Arrive by Ship - Manual

Select 'No' when asked to install fountains-only for LtPD without the quest and aqueduct.
Arrive by Ship is my preferred alternate start mod. There are a few others which you could use instead, or simply not use one at all and just play the vanilla intro.

39. Vampire Hunting - Order of the Virtuous Blood, Dark Brotherhood Chronicles, and Mannimarco Revisited - Manual for all

Grab every file for Mannimarco Revisited - including the OOO patch and v11 patch which overwrites the main .esp. Don't activate the Wardrobe Chest.esp, it's just for debugging purposes.
You may delete the Data/Sound/Voice/Vampire Hunting - Order of the Virtuous Blood.esp folder. We already have the Elys Universal Silent Voice OBSE plugin, so the ~700MB of silent voice files installed with the mod are unnecessary.
NOTE: Mannimarco Revisited is not properly placed within your load order when running BOSS, both .esps must be manually placed BELOW Oblivion_Character_Overhaul.esp or the encounter will be heavily bugged and not work. Don't worry about manual load order changes until the very end of the guide.

40. Oblivion Uncut, Oblivion Uncut Compatibility Patches, Oblivion Uncut OOO Adaptation - Manual for all

For the Oblivion Uncut Compatibility Patches, grab only the Battlehorn Castle, UL Ancient Yews, UL Chorrol Hinterland, and UL Entius Gorge patches. Select only the UL Separate versions for the Ancient Yews and Entius Gorge patches, and disable the Better Cities (BC6) Patch for Chorrol Hinterland since we don't use it.

41. Better Dungeons, The Ayleid Steps, The Lost Spires, and DarkUI Loading Screens for The Lost Spires - Manual for all

Grab the first Main file and BSA file for Better Dungeons.
The Lost Spires has a Nexus page where its patches can be found, but it uses its own website to host downloads, so grab both the main download from its site and then its latest patch from the Nexus.

42. Knights of the Nine Revelation/KotNR, Imperial Dragon Armor Reforged, Knights of the Nine Revelation Continued/KotNRC, and KotNR Ayleid Armor HGEC Conversion - Manual for all

Grab the BAIN package for the Ayleid Armor conversion and select only the HGEC bra cup size sub-package you selected in Step 27 to match it.

43. Ayleid Loot EXtended/ALEX - OMOD, Treasure Chest - OMOD or BAIN, and Immersive Portable Runes - Manual

Select 'Yes' that you're using OOO when installing ALEX.
Leave all the options as their defaults when installing Treasure Chest.

44. Fighters Guild Quests/FGQ, Mages Guild Quests/MGQ, and Guild Advancement - Manual for all

Free Oblivion Config Tool Programs

Grab the UL Snowdale patch and New Roads and Bridges patch for FGQ as well.
Disable the BGU Patch for Guild Advancement since we don't use it.

45. Maskar's Oblivion Overhaul/MOO - OMOD

Select these options when installing MOO. It is also normal for it to take ~20 minutes to compress into an OMOD.
MOO has a very large .ini detailing many options, we'll tweak it at the end.

46. Vanilla Combat Enhanced/VCE, Crossbows of Cyrodiil, and Archery Rebalance - Manual for all

Don't get the Nehrim version for VCE, only the regular main version, and select these options when installing it.
Crossbows of Cyrodiil doesn't come with fitting animations for operating the crossbows unfortunately, so Skyrim gets a one-up over Oblivion when it comes to crossbows. They're still very fun to use though.
We'll do .ini tweaking for VCE and Archery Rebalance at the end.

47. Bladesmans Better Birthsigns, Bladesmans New Birthsigns, Passive Skill Bonuses

This step is pretty optional. I feel that with my increased difficulty settings I need every advantage I can get.
Bladesmans New Birthsigns are definitely not lore-friendly, however they add enough variety in the game that I feel that they're worth it to have.
Grab only the OBSE-required Silent version of Passive Skill Bonuses.
NOTE: Passive Skill Bonuses is not properly placed within your load order when running BOSS, its .esp must be manually placed ABOVE the Bashed Patch.esp. Don't worry about manual load order changes until the very end of the guide.

48. Supreme Magicka/SM - OMOD or BAIN, More Effective Enchantments - OMOD, and Useful Orrery Buffs - Manual

Select these options when installing SM. We'll do .ini tweaking for it at the end.
Useful Orrery Buffs is a tiny but useful little tweak to the Greater Powers you get at the end of the Orrery DLC quest, you can skip it if you don't care about them either way.
I prefer the 10x Vanilla Enchantments option for More Effective Enchantments. If you ever find that your weapons (namely custom-enchanted ones) have very low uses or don't work at all, set the enchantment usage ini option to '1' which will give enchanted weapons the same number of uses as they have charges.

49. Realistic Leveling/RL - OMOD, Basic Physical Activities - OMOD, and A Champions Death - Manual

When installing RL, select DarkUI Levelup Menu as your interface mod, choose Sleep or Verbose Leveling for a Leveling Mode, Medium(65) for Leveling Speed, and Triple(15) for Training Sessions.

50. The following files from Open Cities Patches (Manual for all):

a) COBL Luggage
b) COBL Wells
c) Dark Brotherhood Chronicles
d) Frostcrag Spire
e) Knights of the Nine
f) Kvatch Rebuilt
g) The Lost Spires

Most of these patches have both Open Cities Classic and Open Cities Reborn versions. Obviously, only select the Open Cities Classic patch sub-packages.

51. Unique Landscapes Compatibility Patches - BAIN

Select 'No' on the first screen of the install wizard, it will then automatically detect which compatibility patches you need.
Also grab the Oblivion Uncut - UL Ancient Yews patch in the optional files section as well, it's separate for some reason. Only select the UL Separate sub-package.

52. Landscape LOD Generator/TES4LL - TRUE Manual, unpack to the Data directory.

To use TES4LL, you must run 3 .bat files. The first is the resolution for the landscapes; midres, highres, and ultimate. I heavily recommend tes4ll_midres.bat or tes4ll_highres.bat, use midres if you're worried about performance.
Then, run tes4ll_normalmaps.bat, and finally, tes4ll_qlod.bat. Let each one run, it'll take a few minutes for each.

53. TES4LODGen - Simply start its .exe and it will automatically run.

54. Really Almost Everything Visible When Distant/RAEVWD - BAIN

Grab both the main file and the SI file. Basically say Yes to everything when installing them unless you're worried about performance, select less computer-exploding options if that's the case.
After those are done, grab the QTP3 and Brumbek's SI texture packs from the optional files and install them manually.
Finally, re-run TES4LODGen.exe.

55. Animated Window Lighting System/AWLS - BAIN

Select whichever options you like when installing AWLS. Obviously say Yes to use QTP3/RAEVWD/etc-compatible modules of it.

56. Dynamic Map - OMOD, and Elven Map for Shivering Isles - Manual

Select whatever map style you want for Dynamic Map, I prefer the Terrain Map.

57. Map Marker Overhaul/MMO - OMOD

Select whatever you want for MMO: For Map Marker Styles, I prefer the Colored Icons. Select Detailed Installation for the Ini and then pick what you want.
Use your MMO modifier key (left-ctrl+left-click by default) to change map marker properties in-game as you see fit, and use the Insert key on the map screen to add new markers and so on.

58. Load Order Finalization

Run BOSS one final time. Now we're going to apply load order tweaks to mods that need them - apply the following manual changes by dragging the needed mods to the specified spots within your load order from within WB:
a) Passive Skill Bonuses.esp should be placed above the Bashed Patch.
b) Place both MannimarcoRevisited.esp and MannimarcoRevisitedOOO.esp near the bottom, as long as they're below Oblivion_Character_Overhaul.esp they'll work.
This should now finalize your load order, meaning you don't need to run BOSS again unless you change or add anything. Remember that these manual tweaks will need to be re-applied if you ever run BOSS again!

59. Mod Cleaning

We'll now begin the process of cleaning our dirty mods (see back on Step 5 for a description of what dirty edits are). Open up your BOSSlog.html which is found in the whereveryouinstalledBOSS/oblivion folder. Do NOT re-run BOSS to open up the log page. If you do, then you must repeat Step 58.

Take a look at the messages claiming which mods are dirty in which exact ways, which should be as follows (at least it was for me - if future updates for these mods clean them out of the box, disregard the list and simply follow what BOSS says):
- DLCVileLair.esp - 26 ITM and 1 UDR records
- DLCMehrunesRazor.esp - 21 ITM and 15 UDR records
- DLCSpellTomes.esp - 40 ITM records
- Cobl Glue.esp - 14 UDR records
- TalosBridgeGateHouse.esp - 15 ITM and 31 UDR records
- DLCFrostCrag.esp - 73 ITM and 94 UDR records
- Knights.esp - 121 ITM and 257 UDR records
- The Lost Spires.esp - 165 ITM and 433 UDR records
- Salmo the Baker, Cobl.esp - 34 ITM records
- Better Dungeons.esp - 5 ITM records
- SM_ShiveringIsles.esp - 1 ITM record

Now we'll begin cleaning these plugins with TES4Edit. NOTE that you that you can only clean one plugin at a time, having more than one loaded at once may cause the cleaning to mess up or to be incomplete.
If the steps below are too overwhelming, then I recommend watching the excellent Start to Finish video guide by GamerPoets - I took these steps from following the video myself. For more information on mod cleaning and the terms used within, read this article (it's for Skyrim, but this applies to Oblivion as well).

a) Launch TES4Edit. When the Master/Plugin Selection window appears, right-click the window and then click Select None so that everything is deselected. Check the box for the plugin you wish to clean (start at the top of the list and work your way down for which plugins need cleaning) and it will load into TES4Edit.

b) Right-click the loaded plugin that you wish to clean. Click 'Apply Filter For Cleaning', and wait for it to process. Once it finishes, right-click the plugin again and select 'Remove 'Identical to Master' records'. If a warning window pops up, click Yes that you're absolutely sure you know what you're doing.
Now, for most plugins, ONLY Identical To Master/ITM records need to be removed, but for the ones in the above list that reference 'deleted references', you need to also use the 'Undelete and Disable References'/UDR option from the right-click menu, so make sure you're aware of what exact parts of the mods need cleaning.

c) The mod is cleaned! You can now close TES4Edit (click OK in the window that pops up to ensure that your cleaning is saved in the plugin) and start it up again to begin the cleaning process for the next mod in the list. Continue the process until you're done and all the listed mods are cleaned.

60. Ini Tweaking (Essential to prevent conflicts and crashes, and to increase stability):

- Oblivion.ini, found in My Documents/My Games/Oblivion - Change the iSize W and iSize H lines to reflect your screen resolution if you don't use a 1920x1080 monitor.

61. Ini Tweaking (HIGHLY Recommended for maximum fun, realism, immersion, and difficulty)

Instead of going into these .inis and trying to lower the numbers to reduce difficulty, I simply recommend lowering the game's difficulty slider instead as I've tweaked all of these for more than just difficulty, but it's up to you. I like a hard game!
